last night and tomorrow afternoon we will meet with the speaker and mix mcconnel and harry reid to see if they can avoid going off the fiscal curb on january 1st. today harry reid emphasized that there is ome one reason why they are unable to reach an agreement so far. >> this has been going on for years. they cannot cross over the threshold. people are not proposing making the taxes like them. john boehner could not even pass the tax proposal he passed over there. he said no, can't do that. didn't he bring it up for a vote? >> tonight, speaker boehner's office put out this statement. >> joining me now are our guests. clearly the positioning game continues. harry reid saying we did our job months ago. do you think we til would posturing stage at the end of that white house meeting tomorrow? >> in your introduction you made the fundamental point here which is that this agreement before the end of the year, simply cannot go forward unless john by nor is willing to let it do so with majority democrats in the house. if we go over the curve as you put it, they can vote for a large tax decre
. both sides still far apart, however, on taxes and spending cuts. senate majority leader harry reid says prospects for a deal by monday are still unlikely. there was a lot of movement, motion for not a lot of action. >> where were you yesterday? >> i was here. we were together. >> were we ever with our -- no. but there were duelling senate leaders just -- first mcconnell came on. and he said -- did you see either one of those? >> i did. >> did you see harry reid? >> there's no chance of -- >> but if you think -- i want to rise above. there was so little of anything close to that yesterday other than just the -- i mean, people at home must be like, it's the endless blaming and finger pointing and, you know, when one side says it's all the other side's fault and all the other side comes on and says people at home aren't going, wow, i believe you, harry. or i believe i, mitch. they're saying you're both losers, right? >> right. >> my real concern is this is what the current version of america actually voted for. >> the house is different. all politics is local. harry reid, you know which in
this week when he said that this is now president obama and harry reid's decision to make. and he also said that last night after his plan "b" failed. and so their message is going to be obviously be this is president obama's job and responsibility to come up with something, they tried, obviously couldn't get it through. but in the end, you know, republicans from the beginning of this, they've already -- they've passed two bills earlier this year averting the fiscal cliff before we got to the, you know, three day out period of going over the fiscal cliff. and they've been really bad at marketing that and saying, look, we put forward solutions, the democrats, especially in the senate have done nothing with them. and so i'm not really sure they can recover if we go over the fiscal cliff. like i said in the first segment, i think the best thing for them is to vote present, wash their hands clean and let the democrats live with the consequenc consequences. >> the democrats will have to live with the consequences and republicans, i think, are going to start moving toward tax reform, entitlement
is in washington with a question for you. >> if mitch mcconnell can cut a deal with harry reid will house republicans meet it. >> thehouse reps were opposed to the deal that their own speaker put forward. it was a deal that he didn't reach with the president. tc it was a deal he thought would appeal to house republicans, can she voted no on that. that gets me back to the original people. whatever deal is reached, speaker bayne has to allow the house to vote on it. a lot of people don't realize he's blocking a vote in the house. he's not allowed the majority in the house to take up and pass a bill. instead he implemented this artificial rule that says he won't allow a vote on a he proposal unless at least half of the republicans are in favor of it. when you do that you hand over the keys to the most extreme part of the republican party. that's why harry reid said what he did. because we're not asking for a guardi guarantee this bill pass. we're asking for a vote that it passed the senate to provide tax relief to the middle class. >> congressman that phrase you use, simply allow a vote, it
's best especially harry reid and his gang. they're so worried about everybody in the fiscal cliff. they're obviously worried about how a & p is going to affect people, marginal tax rates, the middle class. good. people need to be worried about the middle class but exactly how worried are they? where there is a will there is a way. there was a will in 1895, a will three years ago. yeah, 2009. but obviously there is a whole lot more talk than action because, let's see, i hear crickets or i hear some hula music but i certainly don't hear the ruffling of papers as any bill is getting passed. so i guess i will leave on this note on christmas eve. you know, i send my best wishes to all the military that are out of the country protecting us and making sure they secure the rights for every american, and i say to congress and the president, if you really were so concerned, you could have done a repeat performance. obviously obama care is signature legislation. cornhuskers, a lot of back room deals. but after 25 days of straight debating, they did pass it on christmas eve. i guess this bill just
